Retroactive Medical Withdrawal

Back to Types of Medical Withdrawals Page

A retroactive medical withdrawal is appropriate if you were unable to successfully complete and medically withdraw from a previous semester because of a physical and/or psychological illness.

A retroactive medical withdrawal removes the student from all courses and will result in zero credit hours for the requested semester. Students can apply for a retroactive medical withdrawal up to two years after the semester in question. After two years, the student’s request will require additional approval from the Provost’s Office.

How to Complete a Retroactive Medical Withdrawal

  1. Complete the online Medical Withdrawal Application.
  2. Schedule a meeting with Auburn Cares to discuss your case. Meetings can be in person, via zoom or over the phone depending on your preference.
  3. Ask your licensed health care provider to submit medical documentation that supports your application directly to Auburn Cares. All medical documentation must follow our Medical Documentation Guidelines.
  4. Submit a personal statement to Auburn Cares in accordance with the Retroactive Medical Withdrawal Personal Statement Guidelines Document.

Once these steps have been completed, the Retroactive Medical Withdrawal Committee will review your application. This committee meets monthly. Once the committee has decided, Auburn Cares will reach out to you via email to let you know the status of your application.

If you have any questions about this process, email the Medical Withdrawal Coordinator or call the Auburn Cares Office at (334)-844-1305.
