Students should contact their instructors directly to discuss all absences.

If a student is unable to contact their professors due to inpatient hospitalization or incapacitation, the Auburn Cares office can assist a student by contacting the Associate Dean of the student’s college and requesting that the student’s professors be notified of their absence. For notification to be sent, the Auburn Cares office must be notified of the incident by the impacted student, parent or guardian.

The Auburn Cares office does not provide class excuses for absences. Please keep in mind that notification of a student’s Associate Dean, and subsequently their professors, by the Auburn Cares office regarding an absence is not an “excused absence.” The notification provided by the Auburn Cares office on the student’s behalf explains the circumstances surrounding an absence (e.g., illness, injury, death in family, personal emergency, etc.) and requests that the instructor work with the student to complete missed course work if appropriate. Depending on the reason for the absence, professors have the right to accept or reject the notification.

The goal of Auburn University and its faculty and students is to foster a dynamic environment of higher learning where all students develop analytical skills, learn to think critically and communicate effectively, promote inquiry, pursue knowledge, and prepare for productive careers. Behavior in the classroom that impedes teaching and learning and creates obstacles to this goal is considered disruptive and therefore subject to sanctions.

The purpose of these sanctions is to create and protect an optimum learning experience; they should not be considered punitive, neither by the student nor by the instructor. Disagreement expressed in a civil fashion, eccentricity, idiosyncrasy, and unconventional behavior are not, per se, disruptive to the classroom experience. These sanctions are intended only to preserve the classroom as a place to pursue knowledge, exchange ideas, and share opinions in an atmosphere of tolerance. Students have the responsibility of complying with behavioral standards.
