Retroactive Family Medical Withdrawal

Back to Types of Medical Withdrawals Page

A retroactive family medical withdrawal is appropriate if you were unable to successfully complete a family medical withdrawal for a previous semester due to the serious illness or death of an immediate family member.

A retroactive family medical withdrawal removes the student from all courses and will result in zero credit hours for the requested semester. Students can apply for a retroactive family medical withdrawal up to a year after the semester in question.

How to Complete a Retroactive Family Medical Withdrawal

  1. Complete the online Medical Withdrawal Application.
  2. Schedule a meeting with Auburn Cares to discuss your case. Meetings can be in person, via zoom or over the phone depending on your preference.
  3. Submit documentation to Auburn Cares.
  4. Submit a personal statement to Auburn Cares addressing the guidelines found in the Retroactive Family Medical Withdrawal Personal Statement Guidelines Document.

Once these steps have been completed, the Retroactive Medical Withdrawal Committee will review your application. This committee meets monthly. Once the committee has decided, Auburn Cares will reach out to you via email to let you know the status of your application.

If you have any questions about this process, email the Medical Withdrawal Coordinator or call the Auburn Cares Office at (334)-844-1305.
