How to manage disruptive classroom behavior

Manage Disruptive Classroom Behavior

  1. Include guidelines for classroom behavior in the syllabus.

  2. If problematic behavior arises, offer a general caution to the entire class that addresses what behaviors are acceptable and unacceptable.

  3. If the behavior persists, request an individual meeting with the student. In the meeting be sure that you:

    • Describe the problem behavior.

    • Give the reason the behavior is disruptive.

    • Explain the consequences of any continued violation.

  4. If the behavior still persists, the instructor is authorized to ask the disruptive student to leave the class immediately for the remainder of the class period.

  5. Report the behavior to the Office of Student Conduct and your department head/chair.
