Create an account on The Auburn Family Portal.

  • This allows you to see your student’s class and grade information.
  • Submit your student’s name and email address so you can connect to them.

Sign up for emergency communication. Ask your student to add you as an emergency contact on AU Access.

  • Opt-in to receive AU ALERT text messages by texting AuburnFamily to 226787 (CAMPUS).
  • Download the Auburn Safety app to receive AU ALERT notifications.

Pay tuition and fees.

Conversations with your Student

Discuss important basic life skills.

  • Banking (depositing money, cashing checks, using ATMs).
  • Automotive (warning lights, checking oil, flat tires, etc.).
  • Laundry (wash, dry, ironing/steaming, dry cleaning).
  • First Aid and Medications (ex. what to do if you get a cut or an upset stomach).

Discuss safety basics.

  • Don’t leave valuables unattended.
  • Lock apartment and car doors consistently.
  • Make a safety plan before going out at night.
  • Travel with a buddy.

Share academic expectations.

  • Discuss a realistic grade point average and what is required for grants and scholarships.
  • Consider how full-time student status (12+ hours) is required for scholarships, financial aid, car insurance, clubs/organizations, etc.

Make a financial plan.

  • Talk about how to budget and pay for expenses.
  • Consider employment options, including on-campus jobs.

Extra Credit

Make plans to see your student every six weeks if possible.

Book a trip to Auburn for Fall Family Weekend and Homecoming.
