On Friday, January 15, Aubie was named the Mascot National Champion at the 2016 UCA Cheer and Dance competition at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla. Aubie competed in the Division 1A mascot group along with ten other mascots who were invited to compete based on scores from a highlight video submitted in November. On Friday night Aubie performed a 90-second skit that, combined with the score from his video, won him his ninth national title. Katherine Browning, director of Aubie and a student at Auburn, stated, “Aubie winning the UCA Mascot National Championship was such a surreal moment for me. The entire Aubie Program has worked incredibly hard this year and being able to watch that work amount to a national championship was extremely rewarding.”

Jackie Young, communications and marketing specialist for student involvement, was able to attend the championship and described the reaction after finding out Aubie had won for the ninth time. “UCA announces the award winners in order from last place to first so there is an incredible build up that happens leading up to the second and first place announcement,” says Young, who was an SGA advisor at the time of the competition and is a former director of Aubie. “When they announced that Goldy the Gopher from Minnesota had won second, our supporters, myself included, went crazy because we knew Aubie had won first place. In fact, I don’t think I ever heard them officially announce that Aubie had won because we were all cheering so loudly. After the initial excitement died down, I was overwhelmed with pride for our students and the Aubie Program. I watched these students pour so much time and energy into making this skit successful and to see them rewarded for that was very special.”

Peyton Alsobrook, graduate advisor for the Aubie Program, believes that the most rewarding part of the experience is “to see hard work pay off. The students that comprise the Aubie Program spend countless hours making sure that Aubie is taken care of so that he can continue to spread the Auburn spirit as he has for the last 37 years. It was great to see all of that hard work rewarded and to see their excitement when Aubie was announced as the winner.”
